The pulp magazines were about detectives solving messy crimes, early superheroes (e.g., the Shadow, Doc Savage) fighting equally lurid criminal masterminds, and so on. Think hard-boiled detective novels where the hero finds a naked woman shot to death in an alley, then gets beaten up by random thugs. They were aimed at a lower class audience, with less education and more of a taste for action and titillation. The comics, paperback books, and especially story magazines (which were called "Pulps.") were inexpensive and lowbrow compared to more serious literature.
